We arrived in Tommerup, which is a small town near the middle of Denmark, and where the main building of Youth for Understanding (YFU) is. YFU is a Danish organization that arranges student exchanges. They send over a thousand Danish (mostly youth) to various parts of the world to stay with host families, including a lot to the U.S. They are largely staffed by volunteers, many of them college students in Denmark, as we found out. The other foreign students had already arrived (with luggage). There are 5 students from Hillsborough Community College in Florida, and 6 students from a technical college in Singapore. Everyone is very nice, and all are getting along nicely.
We had a little orientation and quick language lesson, then mercifully and graciously provided a meal. We were very hungry from traveling all day. We then had a short break before dinner, which was served at around 8:00 (2pm East Coast time). The volunteers cooked a wonderful meal of potatoes (4 ways), and various meats and salads. Students, faculty, and volunteers were getting along swimmingly. After dinner we had a short faculty meeting, then relaxed in the backyard, which was very relaxing.
Tommerup is a very small town, and is quite quaint. The architecture is very nice - a lot of red brick cottages with red tile roofs. The landscaping is generally very nice, and the houses well-kept. My hostel is about a mile from YFU. The town was very quiet when I walked home around 10pm. It was nice to have a bed! I am finding out that the Danes do not use much in the way of air conditioning - the room was very warm, but opening the window made it very nice.
